The Theory Test

We strongly recommend that you begin preparing for the theory test at the same time as you begin your practical lessons. The knowledge that you will build up from both your instructor and your individual study will combine to provide a solid foundation.

The theory test is made up of two parts; the multiple choice part and the hazard perception part. You need to pass both parts in order to pass the theory test. Once you have passed the theory test you can then apply to take your practical driving test.

In Part one of the theory test you'll be asked 50 multiple choice questions. The pass mark is 43 out of 50.

The second part of the theory test is hazard perception. You'll be shown 14 video clips in which you will have to identify 15 developing hazards. The pass mark for the hazard perception test is 44 out of 75.

In addition, the DSA also provide an online service that allows you to test your knowledge and understanding at www.theory-tests.co.uk The complete set of theory test questions and answers is also available in book and CD-ROM format from both the DSA and high street shops.
